Sounds, another may place a submarine crew beneath polar ice, while the next might travel to 1970s Hong Kong, a courtroom in America, the Alaskan wilderness or a forgotten piece of New Zealand history.
Despite those different settings, the stories tend to share the same foundation.
They are about ordinary people facing extraordinary situations.
Glen’s characters are rarely superheroes. They make mistakes, carry history with them, question their decisions and sometimes discover that doing the right thing is far more complicated than it first appeared. Whether the story involves crime, war, family, survival or love, the human consequences matter as much as the central mystery or action.
He particularly enjoys stories where place becomes part of the novel itself. Hong Kong in Brothers of Kowloon, the Marlborough Sounds in The Quiet Water, Alaska in Alaskan Courage, and the landscapes of New Zealand across many of his books are not simply backgrounds. They help shape the people and events within the story.
Glen also believes reading should be enjoyable above everything else.
His aim is simple: create books that pull readers in quickly, keep the pages turning, introduce characters worth caring about and leave something behind after the final chapter.
Today, his growing catalogue includes standalone novels alongside continuing series such as Shadows of the Sounds, Dallas Armstrong, Buried Truths, Pacific Signal, Jack Setter Submarine Thrillers, The Strait Between Us and Brothers of Kowloon.
And there are always more stories coming.
When he is not writing or working with financial advice clients, Glen enjoys life in the Marlborough Sounds with his family, surrounded by the water and landscape that continue to provide plenty of ideas for whatever book comes next.
Thanks for visiting. I hope somewhere among these stories you find one that keeps you turning pages long after you intended to stop.
About Glen Hatcher
Glen Hatcher is a New Zealand author whose novels span crime, thrillers, survival, historical fiction, family adventure and human drama.
He lives in the Marlborough Sounds, a place that has become both home and creative inspiration. Its isolated bays, shifting weather, small communities and extraordinary landscape have found their way into a number of his stories, most notably the Shadows of the Sounds series.
Before becoming an author, Glen spent 22 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, joining at the age of seventeen. That career gave him a lifelong appreciation for discipline, teamwork, leadership and the way ordinary people respond when situations become difficult. Those experiences often influence the military, survival and adventure elements of his fiction, although his stories remain firmly centred on people rather than hardware or spectacle.
After leaving the Navy, Glen moved into financial advice. He continues to work as a financial adviser today, running a successful practice that works with clients throughout New Zealand.
Writing became another chapter entirely.
What began as an interest in telling stories quickly developed into a rapidly growing catalogue of novels. Glen enjoys moving between genres rather than staying inside a single box. One book might follow an investigation through the Marlborough
